TRAINS AND BOATS AND ROADS

There are regular trains on the Tazara line, from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya which stop at Fuga station. If you are planning to visit Selous Impala camp for more 2 or more days, then it is possible for a vehicle to pick you up from the station – it is quite a long drive. It is not possible to travel in the other direction because of time constraints due to the Park roads being closed in the night hours, so you would have to fly on your onward journey.

Tazara Station telno: +255 2860344/7

There are buses in Tanzania connecting the major cities.

ROAD TRAVEL

Driving in Tanzania is fun for the adventurous, but you will need an International Drivers' Licence.

If you are planning to drive from Dar es Salaam to the Ruaha, that is possible and takes about 12 hours.
It is recommended to do it in easy stages, stopping at Mikumi on the way up and possibly at Udzungwa on the way back to Dar es Salaam. Mdonya Old River camp is about 2 hours further drive from the entry gate.

You can also drive from Dar via Kibiti or Kisarawe, to the Selous Game Reserve. The journey takes  from 7 to 9 hours - the road is quite rough. You need to go to Mtemere gate - Impala camp is about half an hour from this gate, Lake Manze Camp about 2 hours from the gate.

You need to arrive in the Selous or Ruaha in good time to get to the camp before dark, as its forbidden to drive after dark there. Nightfall is between 6.30 and 7.00pm depending on the time of year - but the park gates close before that.
