The thirteen suites, each facing over the gardens, pool and ocean.

Mbweni twin Room

Mbweni offers accommodation for no more than 30 guests. All the rooms are air-conditioned, with ceiling fans and louvred windows to the balcony.
They are furnished in exotic Zanzibar style and every room has views of the Indian Ocean and of the gardens.

Mbweni Pool   Mbweni Pool

The crystal clear fresh water pool, enfolded by the lush gardens lies on the edge of the beach, and is pleasant for swimming when the ocean is at low tide.

The Raintree Restaurant

   Sunset dinner

Table decoration

The restaurant and bar offer traditional spicy foods and a panoply of seafood delicacies await the discerning diner.
There is a pleasant relaxing area.
The view from the restaurant sweeps across the Indian Ocean to the islands of Chole, Bawe and Chumbe.

Mbweni jetty  Mbweni beach from jetty

The jetty passes through the mangroves (you can borrow the hotel kayak to explore them!) to the sea
- making embarkation to Chumbe Island and other boats much easier! We can offer trips to the sandbanks,
to stone town or to the islands nearby, on request.

The Mangrove Bar  The Sundowner Bar

The Mangrove Bar perches over the ocean, perfect for that evening drink while you watch the sunset!
Or the older Sundowner Bar (rhs) next to the Raintree Restaurant, offers a comfortable and shady venue for meeting friends.

Mbweni Ruined Chapel  Mbweni Ruined Chapel  Mbweni Ruined Chapel

Romantic ruins from the era of Livingstone can be explored in their lush botanic garden environment,
and over the years we have striven to provide a personal and discreet service in one of  the most beautiful natural and historic situations in Zanzibar.

Frangipani  The Rooms  Heliconia

The luscious gardens, gradually leading down from the ruins to the beach are home and paradise to many species of butterflies and birds.
Mangroves dot the sea, providing a habitat for jewelled fish and birds including the gorgeous Mangrove Kingfisher.

Cycads Red flower Flamboyant

The garden was conceived in 1991 and is now established as a flourishing Botanic Garden
which includes over 650 plant species including 120 species of palms. Most of the plants are labelled.

Cassia Aerial view

A nature trail winds through the garden and the ruins.
The superb palm collection, totalling over 150 species, includes the Majesty palm,
Bottle palm, several kinds of Caryota, Sabals, Borassus, Bismarckia, Licualas, Florida Silver and Thatch palms, Royal palms and many kinds of Dypsis.

Dypsis lutescens Hibiscus Dypsis pembana

Perhaps most interesting of all the Dypsis pembana palm, which is endemic to Pemba Island.
Here the gardeners are pruning the trees around this Pemba palm (on the rhs) to give it air and light.
